Arrangements were made some time ago for six people to act as judges when the entries for the HKVCA Ontario Region Essay Contest were received, three for the English entries and three for the French entries. All those approached agreed to participate. For this we thank them.
Of the entries submitted, judges were able to choose two winners, one at the Junior level in English and the other at the Senior level, also in English. Each merited consideration for the prizes which were available. The Senior winner was Karla Telidetzki, a Grade Twelve student living in Edmonton. Karla has been sent a cheque for $200.00 for a very fine piece of work. The Junior winner, Matthew Silins, a Grade Ten student from Ottawa, has received a cheque for $150.00 for a job well done. Heartiest congratulations to both of these students!
The Essay Contest will be made available next year as well. We hope that many more students, through their participation in such an endeavor, will have a better understanding of the role of the Canadian soldiers in the Battle of Hong Kong, and their place in our history.
Many thanks to those who participated in this our initial Essay Contest.
The deadline for entries will be announced this fall, and will likely be somewhat later than this year’s March 15th to give those wishing to be involved more time to prepare.
