Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

HICKIE, WILLIAM JOSEPH - At the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, May 10, 2002 William Joseph Hickie of Quispamsis, NB, husband of Annie B. (Goosney) Hickie. Born in Nash Creek, NB a son of the late John and Alexia Hickie. He was a veteran WWII having served in the Canadian Army, Royal Rifles. He fought in the Battle for Hong Kong and was a Prisoner of War for four years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #58 of Rothesay. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons; John (Joan) Hickie of Quispamsis and Thomas (Pam) Hickie of Fredericton, two daughters Barb (Conrad) Berube of Fredericton and Linda (David) Bartlett of Lower Maugerville, three brothers; Joseph, Ralph and Austin, fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Resting at CASTLE "Kings Chapel" Funeral Home, 154 Old Hampton Rd., Rothesay (849-1702). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Marks Roman Catholic Church, Quispamsis on Tuesday, May 14, at 10 AM. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery Field of Honor. Visiting at "Kings Chapel" on Sunday 7-9 PM and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Donations may be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of the donors choice. Following the interment a reception will take place at St. Marks Church Hall. The Royal Canadian Legion will hold a Tribute to a Veteran Service at the Funeral Home, Monday at 7 PM.
