Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
Walter, known locally as "Little Walter", was born in Bresaylor on Jan 4, 1907 to John and Liza (nee Pruden) Sayers. In 1926 (Apr 7) he married Harriet Melvina Wells, born Apr 24, 1909 in the Triple Lake area. They had a family of seven children: Beatrice, died young (1928-1946). Suzzell was born in 1930, married Edward Ouellette, and they had one son, Walter, who has three children. Gerald Harvey was born in 1932, married Violet Louise White, and they had three children - Larry, Laura and Paulette. Violet Muriel was born in 1934, married Martin Blondeau, and they had six children - Brian, Maurice, Claudette, Dawn, Zoe and Ann. Ernest Walter was born in 1936, had four children from his fist marriage to Doris Teeters and five children from his second marriage to Cristina Wolfe. Claude Bernard was born in 1938 and died single in 1966. Phillip Orville, the youngest, was born in 1941; he married Kathleen White and they had four children - Phillip, Derry, Sherry and Jodi. Phillip died in 1987.
Walter Sayers (Pte. 2862) was a member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He died in a Japanese prison camp in Hong Kong in 1942 at age 35. Harriet (remarried - White) passed away Jan 22, 1980 at 71 years of age. As of 1991 they had twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-two grandchildren.

Son of John Sayers and Elizabeth Pruden. Husband of Harriet Malvina Wells (a.k.a. Henrietta Melvina), of Battleford, Saskatchewan. Father of Beatrice Audrey, Suzanne, Gerald Harvey, Violet Muriel, Ernest Walter, Claude Bernard, Phillip Orvile, all of Saskatchewan. He enlisted with the Saskatoon Light Infantry and transferred to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada on October 25th, 1941 to fight in Hong Kong with C Force. He had 564 days of service, including 421 overseas.
To commemorate his sacrifice, the Saskatchewan government named Sayers Lake in his honor.
