Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

VARLEY, Leslie J. (Hong Kong Veteran, Military Medal; Secretary Toronto and District Ex Serviceman's Advisory Committee: Life Member Dominion Civil Service War Veterans Assoc.) Suddenly at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto on Sunday, April 16, 1972. Leslie, beloved husband of Dorothy, dear father of Kathy (Mrs. R. Ambers), brother of Wilf and Lillian (Mrs. William Johnston), both of Orillia and Hazel (Mrs. William McAlpine) of Scarborough. Resting at the Giffen-Mack Chapel, 2570 Danforth Ave. at Main St. after 7 p.m. Monday. Service Wednesday 3 p.m. Interment Pine Hills Cemetery. Although flowers would be appreciated, donations may be made to the Ontario Heart Foundation, 247 Davenport Rd., Toronto.

RIFLEMAN JOHN LESLIE VARLEY, a member of the Royal Rifles of Canada, who is a prisoner at Hong Kong, according to a telegram received by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Brooks Varley, 33 Norway ave. Mrs. Varley is secretary of the Hong Kong Relatives' Association. Rifleman Varley is 31. He tried to enlist in September, 1939, but failed to pass the medical because of his eyes. He enlisted with the Royal Rifles in June, 1940, and arrived in Hong Kong on his first wedding anniversary.
