Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

MITCHELL, "Jim" James Fraser "Windy" In loving memory of Jim Mitchell, 90 years of Sudbury who passed away Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 at Extendicare- Falconbridge, Sudbury. Jim was born in Parry Sound and married Violet (Dini) in 1945 in Toronto. Jim had been the warehouse supervisor at Falconbridge Ltd. retiring in 1978 with 43 years service. When Jim was younger he loved the outdoors, spending many hours fishing and hunting. He was a Ham Radio Operator for several years and his call letters were VE3 ESM. Many summers were enjoyed with family and friends at the cottage on Lake Mindemoya. Jim was one of the forgotten Heros of WW2. Jim was captured on December 25, 1941 and spent the entire war as a P.O.W. in a Japanese Concentration Camp. His presence and sense of humour will be missed by all. Beloved husband of Violet (Dini) Mitchell predeceased 2002. Loving father of Jim (Diane), Darlene (John Moffat), Christine (Richard Lefebvre), Landa (Eric Cormier), Cathy Gregorchuk (John Blouin) and Colleen (Mark Steiman). Cherished grandfather of Jim Jr., Shannon, Michael, Danielle, Rik, Tony, Jennifer, Ashleigh, Mitchell, Carly, Rachel, Jason, Jamie and great grandchildren Angelo, Roma, Madison, Emily, Samantha, Jacob and Fischer. Dear son of David and Elizabeth (Ball) Mitchell predeceased. Dear brother of 13 brothers and sisters. At Jim's request there will be no visitation or service. Cremation with interment in the family plot at St. John's Cemetery Garson. Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
