Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Hotton, John Ivan The death of John Hotton occurred at his residence, in St. Catharines, Ontario, on Monday September 28, 1987, as a result of lung cancer, in his 78th year. beloved husband of Stella; dear father of Mrs. Lawrence (Dora) Haigh, Toronto, Mrs. Envern (Gloria) Cotton, St. Catharines, John (Jack) and his wife Anita, St. Catharines, Mrs. Allyster (Carol) Cotton, Fenwick, Ivan and his wife Cecile St. Catharines, and Alfred and his wife Carole, St Catharines. Predeceased by a son George in 1983. Brother of Irene Girard, Toronto and Effi Forester Buffalo, New York. Also survived by 17 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many niece and nephews. He was born in Bougainville, Gaspe, Quebec but had moved to St. Catharines, Ontario in 1963. H was a W.W.II veteran, serving with the Royal Rifles where he was a prisoner of Hong Kong for almost four years. The service was held in the Hulse and English Funeral Home Chapel, St. Catharines. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Brad Haigh, Brampton, Joe Cotton, St. Catharines, Godfrey Cotton, Hillsongburg Collin Cotton, St. Catharines, Perry Cotton, St Catharines and Wayne Cotton, Fenwick. Interment was in Pleasantview Memorial Gardens. Fonthill
