Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Son of Charles Henry Russell, Veteran of the First World War, service number 448154, and Martha Hills. Husband of Florence Mary Simms, of Sillery, Québec. Father of Timothy Robert Russell. Brother of Albert James Russell, service number E-22957, Royal Rifles of Canada, prisoner of war in Hong Kong and in Japan, and of Charles Russell who fought in Europe in the Second World War and survived the war.
He served in Québec, in New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Ontario, in Hong Kong with Force C and as prisoner of war in Japan. He had 1,956 days of service, including 1,327 overseas.

RUSSELL-At Shinagawa Hospital, Japan. July. 1945, Sgt. Robert Leslie Russell, husband of the former Florence Simms and father of Timothy, aged four years. Sad news received from Ottawa on September 14th, 1945. A solemn memorial service was celebrated in St. Patrick's Church, Grande Allee, Wednesday, September 26th.

136 members of 'C' Force are buried in the Yokohama War Cemetery which was constructed by the Australian War Graves Group after the Second World War. It contains the graves of Commonwealth servicemen who died in Japan as prisoners of war or with the occupying forces after the war. It comprises of four main parts: the United Kingdom section, the Australian section, the Canadian and New Zealand section and the Indian Forces 1939-1945 section. The cemetery contains 1,555 Commonwealth burials and commemorations of the Second World War, including 53 unidentified burials and a small number of special memorials to casualties known to be buried in the cemetery, whose graves could not be precisely located.
