Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Dad was one of 6 children and was raised by a single mom as his father died in 1924.
He met my mom in Windsor Quebec after the war. Mom was from Windsor and Dad from Richmond. He always told us he would go to Windsor because the girls were prettier there. Mom would have nothing to do with him until he stopped drinking! Well he did and they were married in 1946.
After Dad returned home he got a job with Bell Canada and worked for them until his retirement in 1976. He travelled to the Northwest Territories several times to work in isolated communities. He was actually the foreman in Frobisher Bay (now Iqaluit) when they installed the first phone lines there.
When Dad retired he took up woodworking as a hobby. He made candleholders, bowls, cradles and even bedroom furniture for some of his grandchildren. My grandson now has my son's bedroom set.
Dad and Mom moved to Prescott Ontario after his retirement so they would be closer to their children who lived in Toronto, Montreal and northern Ontario.
Dad never talked about his experiences but I know we never had rice at home. He always said we didn't need to know the horrors he experienced.
Dad and Mom had a wonderful marriage of 58 years and took great pleasure in their 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
