Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

ON WAY HOME FROM JAPAN
Rfn. Jason H. Hand, husband of Mrs. Gladys Hand, of Chapeau, Que., and L./Cpl. Ernest G. Ladds, son of Mrs. Florence Ladds, of Noranda, Que., both liberated prisoners-of-war of the Japanese, were aboard the "U.S.S. Rixie" which docked at San Francisco on October 11. Following documentation and medical check-up at Vancouver, they will proceed to their homes.

Obituary / Life Story
E30090 Ernest LADDS - MR ERNEST GEORGE LADDS 1920-2004 In memory of Mr. Ernest George Ladds who passed away on August 23, 2004 at the age of 83 in the palliative care unit of the Centre Hospitalier in Rouyn Noranda. Mr. Ernest George Ladds leaves behind his wife Mrs. Lucienne Bergeron Ladds, his grandson Christopher who was there for his grandfather through thick and thin. His sister Mrs. Serene Revoir, his children Danny, Mickey and Judy as well as a number of relatives, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many, many friends. Also a special thank you to the president of the Canadian Legion Branch 188 Mr. Harold McCormick and the Honour Guard. A funeral ceremony was held on Tuesday August 24th, 2004 at the J. H. Fleury Funeral Home followed by interment at the Notre-Dame Cemetery.

Ernest Ladds. Post war he went on to raise 3 children, worked as a plumber at the local copper mine for 40+ years, was an avid outdoorsman and was a legendary fisherman.
