Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

We have been asked to announce the death of Paul Dallain of New Carlisle, which occurred at the Centre d'accueil de la Baie in New-Carlisle on May 17th, 2017 at the age of 95.
He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 62 years, Irene Poole; their sons, Pierre (Nathalie Sauvé), David (Nathasha Villeneuve), Claude and Patrick (Sylvie Roberge); his loving grandchildren, Simon, Corinne, Tristan, Emilie, Philippe, Caroline, Ḿelanie and Samuel.
He also leaves to mourn his brothers; Charles (Laurence Samson), Nicolle (the late Louise Grandmont) and Marc; predeceased by his sisters Alice (the late Gérald Lasnier) and Mary and his brothers Leo (Claire Girard), Francis and Joe (Carol Steponak); and sister-in-law Frances McDermid (nee Poole), his brother-in-law Larry Moniuk (the late Susan Poole) as well as his sisters-in-law from the Dallain family and many nieces and nephews.
A veteran of the battle of Hong Kong at the beginning of the Second World War, he was captured by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war in inhumane conditions for 3 years and 8 months until his liberation on August 8th 1945.
Back home after the war, he opened a hardware store in New-Carlisle. Weakened and having suffered from malnutrition during captivity, he had to abandon his business to focus on fighting tuberculosis.
During the following 7 years, he was hospitalised in several hospitals and sanatoriums including in Sainte-Anne de Bellevue where he met the love of his life, Irene Poole, his charming Occupational Therapist.
They were married on May 14th, 1955. Upon his return to New Carlisle, he worked as postmaster for over 25 years. Despite the hardships, Paul remained a humble and open minded man who loved life, his family and friends.
He was especially fond of his daily walks on the boardwalk at the beach where he would get fresh air, meet people and chat a bit.
The family will receive the condolences at the Henri Thibodeau Funeral Home of New Carlisle on Saturday June 24th starting at 9 AM. The Funeral service will be held at the Catholic Church in New Carlisle on the same day at 11AM.
Donations to the Fondation du Centre d'Accueil de la Baie or a cause of your choice will be appreciated.
Arrangements are in the care of Henri Thibodeau Funeral Home of New Carlisle.
