Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
He Came to Canada in 1922, and resided in Kirkland Lake, Ont. until 1934, then in Noranda. Que. until Oct. 1937, then in South Porcupine Ont. until Feb. 1940, and then in Rouyn, Que. where be joined into the Active Service in Aug. 19th, 1940. He did not discuss his relatives with me nor corresponded with them, so I did not get to know anything about them. However as far as I know, he has a father, two brothers, and a sister living in Ireland. His mother died when he was eight years old. He had no relatives in Canada at all.

Son of Thomas Breen and Elizabeth Willison. Husband of Elma Miriam Kokkonen (alias Kokko), of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Father of Marjorie Elizabeth and Victor Frederick Breen. He served in Québec, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Hong Kong with Force C, in Japan as prisoner of war. He had 1,184 days of service, including 758 overseas.
