Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

IRVING, Westley. At Ste. Anne's Hospital on September 10th, 1973, age 79 beloved husband of the late Edna Lillian Martel dear father of Viola Irving, Muriel (Mrs. G. Heathcote), Edna, (Mrs. MacNeish), Berniece, (Mrs. D Ferguson), Joyce; (Mrs. J. Young), Betty-Lou, (Mrs. R. Duncan), Clark, Max, Wes, Alfred, Alastair, Lorne, Wayne and Don. Also survived by 33 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral service from D.A. Collins Memorial Chapel, 222 Metropolitan Blvd., (Hwy. 2 and 20 at Cartier Ave.), Pointe Claire on Thursday at 3 p.m. Intern Rideau Memorial Gardens.

WWII Royal Rifles of Canada: Out of the 962 members of this Regiment, 30 were part of the Irvine clan- served in Hong Kong- survivors became Japanese POW's- 10 died.
Wesley Irving- born March 14, 1894. Died September 10, 1973 in Montreal. Wes was the sixth child of Alexander and Barb Irvine of Mann Settlement. Wesley served with the RRC in Hong Kong. He became a Japanese POW in Hong Kong. He decided to change his surname to Irving in order to avoid confusion of having two W. Irvines in flatlands. They had 14 children. He is buried in Rideau Gardens Cemetery Roxboro Quebec.

Westley was the 7th child of Alexander and Barb Irvine of Mann Settlement. Westley served with the RRC in Hong Kong. He became a Japanese POW. In-correct - he decided to change his surname to Irving in order to avoid confusion of having two W. Irvines in Flatlands. Correct - His surname was IRVING before he enrolled in the RRC.
