Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

John KILLORAN is the soldier in the middle of this picture. They poised for this picture before the fighting started in December, for a Canadian army photographer.
John M. Killoran was born in Belledune N.B. on September 12, 1917. He grew up on a farm, the oldest boy of 7 children. He went to a one room school. His Aunt was his teacher from grade 1 to grade 8.
He did not talk to us about his war experiences, other than to say we wouldn't believe him if he told us. He was a very humble man, who put those years away in a dark closet, and didn't open it again.
His trade was a construction pipefitter. He worked in Edmonton, Alberta, Dartmouth N.S., And all over Ontario, but based in Sarnia, Ontario. He lovey building refineries and chemical Plants, knowing what he build would last his lifetime He was well respected in the construction Industry.
He was a Legion member for over 50 years, and my mother and he worked tirelessly supporting the Legion functions in Lambton in county. He was a founding member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church for over 35 years. After he retired they took many trips and cruises. He completed many home projects and enjoyed golfing with Mom and friends.
He treasured his grandchildren and was always keen to hear about their events. Unfortunately, he suffered the last few years of his life with poor breathing, caused by asbestos.
During the last few days of his life, he had bad nightmares. He was kicking the hell out of the sheets on his bed, telling my Mom that the Japs were fighting with him, coming right onto his bed. I guess that pain never left him, as much as he tried to hide it. He was an excellent husband, father and grandfather. An excellent pipefitter. We miss him every day.
