Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
At the Queen Mary Veterans' Hospital, on June 15th, 1970, aged 53 years, Alexander Ryan Delaney, beloved husband of Frances Caldwell. Dear father of Sandra (Mrs. Ronald Auclair), Christine and Howard. Brother of Mary (Mrs. John Burns), Velma Delaney, Ann (Mrs. W. Janell), Laura (Mrs. Paul Harquael), James and Maxwell. Funeral Thurs., June 18th from J. R. Deslauriers Funeral Chapel, 790 St. Croix Blvd., St. Laurent, for service at 2 p.m. Interment Field of Honor Cemetery.

The following information is taken from a family history book by George Russell in 2000 for the Irvine Family of the Mann Settlement. calvary@sgci.com. WWII Royal Rifles of Canada: Out of the 962 members of this Regiment, 30 were part of the Irvine clan- served in Hong Kong- survivors became Japanese POW's- 10 died.
Alexander 'Babe' Ryan Delaney- born March 10, 1917. Died 1970. Alexander was the eighth and youngest child of James and Christie Delaney hence his name nickname 'Babe'. Alexander served with the RRC in Hong Kong. He became a Japanese POW in Hong Kong. He worked for the CN. He is buried in the Veterans Cemetery, Montreal. They had three children.
