Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Cpl. Raymond Stoddard, of Royal Rifles of Canada, is now a prisoner-of-war of the Japs, having taken part in the abortive defence of Hong Kong. A long service member of the non-permanent active militia, he served long enough in the 7th-11th Hussars to earn his Canadian Efficiency Medal, finishing as a squadron sergeant major. His wife, the former Marjorie Winslow, lives at Eaton Corner, Que.
Oldest of the five, Corporal Raymond Stoddard, 35, is a prisoner of war with the Royal Rifles at Hong Kong. Born June 19, 1907, at Fassette, Que., he was educated at South River, Ont., Public School and Cookshire Academy, and is married to the former Marjorie Winslow, of Eaton Corner. Military life first attracted him in 1928, when he joined the Signal Corps of the 7/XI Hussars. When war broke out he was living in Lancaster, N.H., where he was employed, and on August 24 he returned to Canada and enlisted for active service with the Royal Rifles. For some time before the unit left Canada he served as Sergeant Major for the Royal Rifles in Cookshire. In the recent mail from Hong Kong his wife received a letter in which he reported being in good health and receiving good food and excellent treatment. He said he would write home once a month.
