Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
Capt. Joseph Rafferty, late of Sardis, formerly of Vancouver, passed away Nov. 29, 1992 in Chilliwack General Hospital, age 70 years. He was born Mar. 9, 1922 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He had lived in this area since 1964. Retired Captain from the Canadian Armed Forces. He enjoyed sailing, travelling, woodworking and golfing.
Funeral Service was held Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1992 at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Henderson's Funeral Home, Rev. Weldon Holland officiating. Cremation at Valley Crematorium.
He is survived by four children: Kent (Cathy) Rafferty, Calgary, Alta.; Robin (Bob) Blair, Ladner; Kathy Rafferty, Coquitlam; Kelly (Rany) Takenaka, Kelowna; five grandchildren: Brad, Ryan, Shanna, Taryn and Burgandy; four brothers: Hugh and Bert Rafferty, Winnipeg, Man.; Jack (Jackie) Rafferty, Waterloo, Ont.; Leslie (Audrey) Evans, Winnipeg, Man.; two sisters: Jean (Shorty) Adams, Hamilton, Ont.; Elsie (Fred) Magas, San Lorenzo, California; special friends, Hilkka and her son, Peter. If friends so desire, donations may be made to charity of your choice. Henderson's Funeral Home, Chilliwack, in care of arrangements.
