Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

John Fertal, late of Calgary, formerly of Wetaskiwin passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at the age of 79 years. He was predeceased by his wife Anne in 1984. John will be sadly missed by his children, Kelly (Terry) Maygard, Sharon (Doug Schwindt) Materi and Randy (Gail) Maygard; his eight grandchildren, Jessica (John) Darel, Christopher (Melissa) Materi, Charlie Maygard, Tyler Coombs, Jaron (Elizabeth) Chasca, Natasha Maygard, Ashley Maygard and Sharla Chasca; and one great-granddaughter Megan Materi. He is also remembered by his two sisters, Annie (Herb) Woitt and Jennie Heinz (Norman Clark); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was born March 26, 1922 in Czechoslovakia and came to Canada at an early age to the Wetaskiwin area. John joined the army, served in Winnipeg Grenadiers and in the defense of Hong Kong. On December 25, 1941 he was taken prisoner in Hong Kong until he was liberated on September 19, 1945. Upon returning to Canada he worked in the oil field and farming. In the early 1960's he moved to Calgary and in 1985 he retired after twenty years with Natco Canada. Visitation for family and friends will be held at LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME (17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.) on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will held at Leyden's Funeral Home "Chapel of Remembrance (17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.) on Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Lakedell Cemetery (near Pigeon Lake) at approximately 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation may do so to the Wetaskiwin Legion Branch No. 86 (5003 - 52 Avenue, Wetaskiwin, AB T9A 0W9).
