Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

H41719 Lloyd Hanna - 1923-2007 In the afternoon of September 21, 2007 Lloyd Wesley Hanna, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away surrounded by his family. His strength and determination was with him until the last as he managed to hold on to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife and family the evening before. He is survived by his wife Roberta, his daughters: Fran and Denis Berube, Jo-Ann and Clayton Brown, and his grandchildren: Mark and Anne Berube, Craig and Jeannie Brown and great granddaughter Magnolia Brown, Jan Berube and Erin Brown, his surviving siblings, Ruby Hanna of Winnipeg and Betty (Stan) Stewart of Atikokan, Ontario, Jack (Alice) Hanna of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Bill (Angie) Hanna of Sault Ste, Marie, Ontario, and Eva Hanna of St. Rose du Lac, Manitoba as well as many nephews, nieces and friends. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, his parents, Claire and Wesley Hanna, brothers, Murray, Robert, sister-in-law Pat Hanna, and niece Janet Hanna.
Lloyd was born on his parents’ farm in Keyes, Manitoba on November 9, 1923. At the age of 17 he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers and shortly after was sent to Hong Kong. He was captured on Christmas Day, 1941 and spent the remaining years of the war in Japanese prison camps in Hong Kong and Japan. On his return to Canada he married Roberta Roe. Lloyd had a brief career as a miner in Flin Flon, Manitoba and then he and Roberta returned to the family farm, eventually retiring in Gladstone, Manitoba. Lloyd and Roberts enjoyed many winters in Texas prior to their moves to Nanaimo and White Rock in British Columbia.
Although Lloyd struggled with health issues as a result of his war service, he never complained and will always be remembered for his caring heart, his sense of humor, his confidence, his guidance and his sense of fairness. He was a straight shooter but always very supportive to his family and friends. He never failed to tell his children and grandchildren to call collect from wherever they were in the world. He will be greatly missed for his wisdom and his compassion.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Benitez-Gomez and the staff of Weatherby 2 Pavillion at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock for the loving care they provided.
