Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

On Tuesday, October 29, 1991 at the Portage General Hospital, Pastor Robert Utech, late of Portage la Prairie, MB, passed away at the age of 72 years.
Robert was born in Grandview, Manitoba, the son of William and Flora Utech. He attended school in Winnipegosis and in 1940 joined the Winnipeg Rifles and saw action during World War Two in Hong Kong. He became a prisoner of war overseas before being granted his honourable discharge in 1945. It was at that time that he returned to Winnipegosis and remained there until 1986 when he moved to Portage la Prairie to pastor until his passing.
Predeceased by his parents William and Flora Utech; one son-in-law Robert Dell; he leaves to mourn his passing his wife Alice (nee Sanderson); daughters Joyce (Leslie) Barker, grandchildren Gerald and Sarah; Linda (James) Toye, grandchildren Rachael, Gordon, and Stephen; Esther Taylor, grandchildren William, Mary-Alice, Rene and Alison; Sharon (Leslie) Flaming, grandchildren Valdine and Josiah; Maria Dell, grandchildren Jacqueline and Nicole; Brenda, and grandchild John Robert; sons Gordon (Karen), grandchild Mark; Terry (Beatrice), grandchild Trevor; and son Blaine.
The funeral service was held from the Christian's of Evangelical Faith of Portage, 58-5th St. N.W., Portage la Prairie, MB, on Friday, November 1, 1991 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. J.D. Harbarenko officiating. The eulogy was given by Mr. William Taylor. Word of exhortation was given by Evangelist Mr. James Toye.
A duet, "You Don't Need To Understand, You Just Need To Hold His Hand", was sung by Mary and Hazel Turner. Song leader Rev. Ike Dyck led the congregational hymns, "In The Sweet Bye and Bye", and "Tis Sweet To Trust in Jesus", with Mrs. Mary Turner presiding at the organ.
Acting as honorary pallbearers were veterans from the Hong Kong Veterans Association.
Active pallbearers were Messrs. Gordon Utech, Leslie Barker, Grant Wilde, Leslie Flaming, Adam Rumak and James Toye.
Interment followed in the Veterans section of Hillside Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Portage Funeral Chapel, Portage la Prairie, MB.
