Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

JOHANNES JOSEPH (JOHN) VAN BAALEN Peacefully on August 20, 2008, John Van Baalen passed away at Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 92 years. John is survived by his loving wife Olga Kuchar; grandsons Neil and Bryan Van Baalen; step children Nellie, Wally, Donna. He will be missed by all his 10 step grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren; sister Mary Robertson; nieces Lynda and Brenda Robertson; He was predeceased by his first wife Christine; daughter Sheila Van Baalen; brother William Van Baalen and sister Dorothy Meakin. John was born in Winnipeg on January 8, 1916. He served in Hong Kong as a private in the peacekeeping forces with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. John was a prisoner of war camp for four years. He was a sociable person who enjoyed talking to all. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Tower 7 at Deer Lodge Centre for all their care and support. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, August 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. An online book of condolences may be signed at www.cropo.com. He will be sadly missed and will always be in our hearts.
