Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

H41826 David MARTIN - David Martin of the Sherbrooke Veterans Village, Saskatoon, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 16th, 2004 four days after his 85th birthday. He is survived by his children Carla (Rudy)and their children Max, Nic, and Ben; and Larry (Jennifer) and their son David. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Clara (1996). David was born in Stonewall, MB November 12th, 1919. Like many young men he worked hard on the family farm with his family. In his early 20’s he enlisted with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and was one of the first Canadian Battalions sent to Hong Kong in October 1941. On Christmas Day 1941 he became a POW until his release in August 1945. He returned to Canada, found and married the love of his life, and eventually settled in Saskatoon to raise his family. He worked for the Saskatoon Public School Board until his retirement. He remained an active member of the Hong Kong Veterans Association and attended many conventions. Despite numerous challenges in his life, David always found the humour in any situation and was an inspiration to those who knew him. Special thanks to Dr. Danlikewich and the staff at RUH and Sherborrke who looked after David over the years. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 19th, 2004 at 10:00 am at the chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home followed by a reception at the Edwards Family Centre prior to the interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Royal University Hospital Foundation, c/o Family Medicine, 103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N oW5.Condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com.
