Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

On Monday, November 15, 1993 at Richmond General Hospital, Richmond, B.C., following a lengthy illness, Alexander Contois of Richmond and formerly of be Winnipeg, beloved husband of Shirley Contois, passed away at the age of 72 years.
A wake service will be held at the Long Plains School Gymnasium, Long Plains, Man. on Saturday, November 20. Funeral service will be held at the Lang Plains School Gymnasium on Sunday, November 21, at 2:00 p.m. with Deacon Rudy Le Maître officiating. Interment will follow in the Long Plains Cemetery.
Alexander was born on April 28, 1921, son of Harriet and Joseph Contois at Austin, Man. He was raised at Long Plains, Man, and received his education at Portage la Prairie and La Bret, Sask. In 1941 he joined the Canadian Army and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers during the Second World War and was a prisoner of war in Hong Kong. His courageous efforts made during his service have been recognized through various
medals including the 1939-1945 Star, the Pacific Star, the Volunteer Medal and the Victory Medal, Alexander also of served in the Korean Conflict and was honoured with the Korean Defence Medal. After his discharge from the Army, he resided in Winnipeg where he met and her married Shirley Yellowquill on August 15, 1959. They continued to reside in Winnipeg where he to, was employed at the Winnipeg Airport and later with the City of Winnipeg Parks Department, retiring in 1971. In 1990 they moved to reside at Richmond, B.C.
Alexander was a devoted Catholic and served as president of St. John Bosco Centre at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. He was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the guitar. He also enjoyed watching wrestling on TV with his grandchildren.
Predeceased by his and parents; a daughter Betty Anne Yellowquill in 1990; four brothers, Max, Bill, Leonard and George; one sister Anne Fontaine; grandson Carl Contois in 1989; he leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Shirley Elizabeth of Richmond, B.C.; six sons, Gregory and his wife Judy of British Columbia, Leonard of Edmonton, Alta., Wayne, Leo, Peter, Dennis, all of Vancouver; seven daughters, Laverne Gervais of Montreal, Denise Zorget of Vancouver, Theresa, Jackie, Joyce, Michelle, all of Winnipeg, April of Vancouver. Also surviving are 36 grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
