Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

JOHN HENRY BATTEN - On January 15, 1975 at his residence, John Henry Batten, aged 56 years, beloved husband of Georgina of 368 Bronx Ave. Mr. Batten was born in Liverpool, England. He had been a printer with the National Grain Company until his retirement due to ill health in 1972. He had served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers during the Second World War in Hong Kong, where he suffered as a P.O.W, at the Japanese from December 1941 until the duration. Besides his wife Georgina, Mr. Batten in survived by his sister-in-law Mrs. B. McLeod, and nephew Wayne McLeod of Winnipeg and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stanier of Vancouver, B.C. Friends may call at the chapel Friday (tonight) 7:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral service Saturday 11:00 a.m. in the Bardal Funeral Home, Sherbrook at William. Interment in Elmwood Cemetery. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Fund. Bardal Funeral Home in care of arrangements, phone 774-7474.
