Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

William (Bill) Albert Hall, late of Chilliwack, formerly of New Westminster, passed away June 12, 1996 in Chilliwack, B.C., age 80. He was born June 12, 1916 in Expanse, Saskatchewan.
During the war as a member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers he was captured at the battle of Hong Kong and survived nearly four years in Japanese P.O.W. camps. Ironically several years after the war he started a career in eh federal penitentiary system at Stony Mountain, Manitoba. He was transferred in 1964 to British Columbia Penitentiary, where he spent 4 years as director of the training facility. His last 10 years were spent as warden in Agassiz and at Ferndale (Mission), where he retired in 1978.
Private service was held June 16 at his home. George Kent officiated. Cremation at Henderson's Chilliwack.
He is survived by his wife Ivy and his sons Terry (Andrea) of Prince George, Bud (Carol) of Kenora, Gary (Debbie) of Sardis, and his daughter Sharleen of Chilliwack, and his best buddy Brandy. Also his brother Jim (Betty) of Saskatoon. Plus his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all.
He was predeceased by his brother Gordon in Nanaimo in 1989. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

H6047 William HALL - Son of B. Hall, 647 St. Matthews Avenue, Corporal W.A. Hall is with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Hong Kong, previously serving with the battalion in the West Indies. His wife and daughter are living in Kenora. NOTE- H6047 William HALL had no dgt. He had sons Terrance and William.
