Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Suddenly on October 13th, 1984, Milton John (Brad) formerly of 1207 Hamilton Street, Calgary, Alberta, died at the age of 65. He was born in 1919 in Edenborough, Scotland and came to Canada with his parents in 1920. He joined the Winnipeg grenadier's in 1939, and was a prisoner of war in Hong Kong for 4 and 1/2 years.
He is survived by his loving wife Sylvia, two sisters, Mrs. Chapman (Mary) and Dorothy Granger of Winnipeg and several nieces and nephews. Milton was predeceased by his father John in 1954 and his brother 1963 and his mother in 1965.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 17th in Calgary.

H6054 John BRATCHELL - infant son passed away Dec. 15, 1942 age 7 months. (while father was in prison camp) Death of infant son: The Winnipeg Evening Tribune -- December 16, 1942. Private J. M. Bratchell - A member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers since the outbreak of war, Pte. Bratchell served with the regiment in the West Indies and was one of the defenders of Hong Kong. He married Mary Leslie, of Winnipeg, three days before leaving for the Orient. His parents reside at 320 Simcoe Street.
