Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

ALFRED JOHN COX - Peacefully, on January 30, 1992, Alfred John Cox, aged 77 years, beloved husband of Catherine Cox, passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre. Alfred was born in Carleton Place, Ont., on March 19, 1914. He is survived by his loving wife Catherine and three sons, Ken, Allen and his wife Irene, Ron and wife Colleen; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Matthew, Kimberley, Karen, Steven and Jessica. Surviving also are his brothers, Albert and Ern and their families. Alfred was predeceased by his parents; his brother Tom and sister Pearl. Alfred was in the Salvation Army all his life and was a bandsman. He served in the Winnipeg Grenadiers from 1939-1945 and was a Hong Kong Veteran. He joined the RCAF Northwest Air Command Band in 1946. After retiring from the Air Force he worked for the Province of Manitoba in Consumer and Corporate Affairs. In his retirement Alfred enjoyed the great outdoors at his cottage with family, fishing and boating. He also enjoyed travelling and music. Alfred is fondly remembered as a loving husband and a loving father and will be sadly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society of Manitoba, 205 Edmonton St., Winnipeg, Man. R3C 1R4. The family would like to express its most sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff and volunteers at Deer Lodge Centre, especially the staff of T3 for their loving care. Prayers will be said on Monday evening, February 03, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. at Luxton Ave. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 04. 1992 at 10:30 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, with Captain W. Perrin officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements, 586-8044.

Bandmaster Henry G. Merritt and other members of the Winnipeg Citadel Salvation Army band have followed with keenest interest the fight put up by the Winnipeg Grenadiers at Hong Kong for two reasons.
In the first place, four members of the band were at Hong Kong with the Grenadiers—Sgt. Albert Cox (H6397) and Pte. Alfred Cox (H6068) brothers; Pte. Reginald Kerr (H26072) and Pte. George Stevenson (H6792).
Again, the Citadel band escorted the Grenadiers on their last church parade before they went to the Far East. The parade was to Knox United Church on Oct. 19 and the Chicago Salvation Army staff band also took part.
The four bandsmen with the Grenadiers are not the only former members of this band with the armed forces. No less than 11 others are in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
