Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Our George and Mary Temple
This shot shows that the Temples have not lost their interest in the Legion. On this occasion, they were selling Poppies for Vancouver Royal Canadian Legion Branch #168. In their letter they asked to be remembered to all their old friends, both in the Branch and Ladies Auxilliary. George is still a member of #4
Submitted by daughter - I really don’t know that much about his life or his family from when he was younger as he didn’t talk about it. All I know is that his parents names were Ralph Francis Temple & Margaret Naomi Green. He married my mother Florence Mary Saunders on Feb 6, 1937. I am 1 of 3 children born to them. Before the war he worked as a Tailor’s helper at T Eaton Co. After the war he worked as an orderly at Deer Lodge Hospital and at Vancouver General Hospital. He died Feb 20, 1979 in Vancouver. He is buried at Mount View Cemetery in Jones 2-26 Plot #228. Wish I knew more.
