Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

RANCHO BERNARDO James W. Hallbert, 75, of 16927 Dominican Drive died Jan. 24 at Pomerado Hospital after an extended illness. He was born Aug. 18, 1902, on a plantation near Lake Charles, La., and was graduated from Tulane University.
He served in the Canadian Army in World War II and was stationed in Hong Kong when the war broke out. He was captured by Japanese military forces and was a prisoner of war in Japan for four years.
He manufactured and distributed nationally the salad dressing known as "Holly House" following his return to the United States. The family home was then in Minneapolis, Minn. He had lived in Rancho Bernardo the past nine years. Surviving is his wife, Helen Holloway Hallbert.
There will be no public service or memorial. Following cremation, his ashes will be buried at sea by the Neptune Society. This is in the family tradition because five generations of his family, including his father, were sea captains. Memorials may be made to the Lung Association of San Diego.
James W. Hallbert, 76, died Jan. 24 in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. An American citizen, he was among the Canadian forces serving in Hong Kong at the beginning of World War II, and was a Japanese prisoner of war for four years. Hallbert manufactured and distributed nationally Holly House salad dressings. At that time he lived in Minneapolis. He is survived by his wife, Helen Holloway Hallbert. There will be no public service or memorial. Memorials in his name may be made to the Lung Association of Hennepin County.
