Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

From grandson Gord Hemmerling - May 2019.
My grandmother and grandfather separated in 1937 when my mother was 6 years old, they never did divorce. It was sad to see my grandfathers obit from the Calgary paper and it did not mention my mother at all.
Family dynamics can be very strange. My mother and her Dad (H6251 Colin MCFADYEN) were estranged especially after the war as he did not want to see her when she went to visit him in 1950 in Calgary so growing up she never talked about him at all. Only after her death did we find these pictures and letters he had sent during the war, sad to think they never reconnected and he never knew he had grandkids.
I am pretty sure my grandfather must have remarried as noted in the obit and was survived by 2 other daughters which I have never been able to find. Since I started this journey of tracing family I have copies of most of the medals given to him however I missed the time to obtain the Memorial medal and I did get the grave marker installed at his grave site in Calgary which I have yet to revisit.
