Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

LESLIE (LES) GEORGE ADAMS
Surrounded by family, Leslie George Adams passed away on Monday, February 15, 1999 at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 81.
Les will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by Madelon, his wife of 59 years and four months, daughter Wendy (Peter); son Jack (Brenda); granddaughters, Melanie (Kevin), Meredith and Karissa; great-grandson Bailey; sisters, Myrtle of Winnipeg, and Pearl of Carman, Man.; sister-in-law Merle of Toronto, Ont.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Les was born in Winnipeg on April 26, 1917. He was raised and educated in Carman. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in September, 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War, serving in Bermuda and Jamaica prior to departing for Hong Kong in October, 1941. Les was captured during the Battle of Hong Kong and was a prisoner of war for four years, returning in October, 1945. Upon his return, Les became a lifetime member of the Carmen Legion and served a term as president. He was also a charter member of the Carman Kinsman Club. Les was employed for a number of years with Safeway and IGA as a meat cutter. He was a devoted member of Shaughnessy United Church, chairing the Board and Session over the years. Les volunteered his time canvassing for miles, and miles, year after year, for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Cancer Foundation, his name appearing in articles in the local newspaper and Reader's Digest for his volunteerism. He faithfully visited the sick and attended the memorials of his friends and his Hong Kong comrades until his own hospitalization.
