Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

BRONIK LEWICKI - (Hong Kong Veteran) - On April 11, 1995 at the Lakeshore General Hospital, Bronik Lewicki, age 73 years, dearly beloved husband of Alice Lewicki (nee Cooper) of Steep Rock, Man. Bronik was born in Poland and came to Canada at the age of six. He farmed with his family at Faulkner and fished on Lake Manitoba until he joined the Army at the age of 17.
Bronik joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers and served in Jamaica and the ill-fated expedition to Hong Kong, where he remained a prisoner of war for 44 months. Bronik's health was never the same after he returned from the war. He worked for the Canada Cement La Farge Company, until a major heart attack forced his early retirement. Bronik was a member of the Hong Kong Veterans Association, a past member of the Hong Kong Veterans Association, a past member of Constellation Chapter of the Eastern Star No. 38, and a past president of Altona Branch (Steep Rock Legion).
Bronik loved life and never gave in to any of the disabilities that hindered him because of the horrible treatment in the Japanese prisoner of war camp. Bronik is survived by his loving wife Alice of 45 years, one son Lloyd and girlfriend Cathy of Winnipeg; sisters, Jean (Al) Godlewtki of New York, Carol Tonner of Ontario, and Anne Smart of Chicago. He was predeceased by his mother Maria, father Adam and two infant sisters.
It was Bronik’s wish that there will be no funeral service. He wanted his family and friends to remember him in life and not be tad too long. He also wished to be cremated and his ashes remain with his wife Alice. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Lakeshore Hospital Guild, care of Runa Mangl, Ashern, Man.
When I must leave you For a little while- Please do not grieve And shed wild tears And hug your sorrow to you Through the years,
But start out bravely With a gallant smile; And for my sake And for my name Live on and do All things the same,
Feed not your lonliness On empty days, But fill each waking hour In useful ways,
Reach out your hand In comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you And hold you near
And never, never Be afraid to die For I am waiting for you in the sky! ARNASON'S Funeral Home, Ashern in care of arrangements.
