Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

ARTHUR WILLIAM BATY - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear father in Burnaby, B.C. on Wednesday, June 09, 1993. Our dad was born in Carlisle, England, August 08, 1917, came to Canada at the age of four, settling in Winnipeg. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers, serving in Jamaica from 1939 to 1941 and from 1941 to 1945 he was a Japanese prisoner of war in Hong Kong. After the war he resided in Winnipeg. He worked for Winnipeg Transit from 1946 to 1982. Upon retirement he moved to Burnaby, B.C. where he lived for the past ten years. He was predeceased by his first wife Jean in 1981; brothers, John in 1969 and Stanley in 1987. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Loretta; his loving children, Sandra, her husband Sandy, children Shauna and Robert and his girlfriend Karen; Lynn; Roberta; Glenn, his wife Heather, their children, Jesse, Kimberlee and Layne, all of Calgary; Gary, his son Jeffrey; and Debbie, her children, Jordan and Kelleigh; stepson Sean. Also surviving are his sisters, Pat and her husband Howard, Ellen; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia of Edmonton and Marcelle of Winnipeg and numerous nieces and nephews; half-brother Ernest. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Canadian Celiac Association, Manitoba Chapter, Box 1894, Winnipeg R3C 3R2 or St. Martins-in-the-Field Anglican Church, 160 Smithfield Ae., Winnipeg. Cremation will take place in Burnaby, B.C. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg on Saturday, June 19, 11:00 a.m. at St. Martins-in-the-Field Anglican Church, Rev.
