Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
STANLEY BATY - On Monday, December 07, 1987, Mr. Stanley Baty, aged 68 years, beloved husband of Mrs. Sylvia Baty, passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. Along with his beloved wife he leaves to cherish his memory two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Bruce Aubert and Lorraine and Jeffrey May of Edmonton; two granddaughters, Meredith and Elizabeth Aubert of Edmonton; one brother Arthur Baty of Vancouver, two sisters, Ellen Batey of Winnipeg and Patricia and her husband Howard Edmunds of Edmonton; two step-brothers, William Baty of Selkirk and Ernest Bay of Winnipeg; one step-sister Nora McBride of Moose Jaw and a sister-in-law Marcelle Baty of Winnipeg. Mr. Baty was predeceased by his brother John. Born in Carlisle, England, Stanley came to Canada in 1922. In 1939 he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers and served overseas. Stanley fought in the Battle for Hong Kong and was a Prisoner of War in Japan for 3 years, 8 months and 5 days. Married March 1, 1947, Stanley and Sylvia resided in Manitoba prior to coming to Edmonton in 1955. Following the war, he worked as a printing press man until his retirement in 1977. He remained active with the Hong Kong Veterans Association, Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan Branch. In accordance with his wishes, cremation followed. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Anglican Cathedral, 135 Anderson Ave. E., Winnipeg, Man., 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 19, 1987 with the Very Rev. J.E. Setter officiating. His cremains will be laid to rest in the Cathedral’s Columbarium. If friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Walter C. MacKenzie Hospital, Cardio-Vascular Intensive Care Unit, 8440 – 112th St., Edmonton, Alta. Brother to H6454 Baty, Arthur William
