Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Quietly and peacefully on Saturday, August 12, 1995, at the St. Boniface I Hospital, Omar Runnells, aged 74 years, dearly beloved husband of Margaret Runnells of St. Boniface passed away.
Omar was born and raised in Winnipeg. He enlisted with the Winnipeg Grenadiers on September 21, 1939, and was sent to Jamaica for Basic Training. From there, they were sent to Hong Kong, where he became a prisoner of war until 1945. On his return from Hong Kong, he met and married Margaret Nuytten. Omar was employed by the Coca-Cola Company as a driver salesman. He was a great lover of jazz and spent many hours listening to music and reading.
Omar leaves to cherish his memory his wife. Margaret; two sons, Randy (Vera) and Rory; one daughter Joanne; two sisters, Evelyn (Joe) Golfman and Shirley (Mike) Hujwan; brother-in-law Eugene (Irene)
Nuytten; sister-in-law Bertha (Bob) Muller; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons St., with Rev. William Oakely officiating. Service to terminate in the chapel. Cremation to follow. Inurnment of cremated remains to be held at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens at a later date.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
