Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
Peacefully, on August 8, 1999 at the Seven Oaks General Hospital, Joseph A. Miller, age 80, passed away.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Stella on May 25, 1985, he is survived by daughter Joan Palmer and her children Cheryl, Michael and Joanne, Joe and Wanda, Kathy and Jim; son Arnold and wife Sheron and their children Cindy and Richard; great grandchildren Ashley, Brittany and Kyle Palmer. Also surviving him are two sisters; Nellie Pukalo and Pat Strong; two brothers George and Len of Vancouver, British Columbia and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers Edward, John and Ray.
Dad was born August 10, 1918 at Glencairn, Manitoba. As a young man, he worked at various jobs and in 1939, he enlisted in the Canadian Army with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He served in the Caribbean before the regiment was sent to Hong Kong. After 42 months as a prisoner of war, her returned to Canada, to East St. Paul, Manitoba and resumed his life with his family. He retired in 1971 to enjoy his garden, his friends and his loving family.
The family wishes to thank Dr. H. Nyhof and the caring staff at Seven Oaks Hospital.
Pallbearers will be his six grandchildren. Funeral service will take place in the chapel of Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, on Wednesday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m. with viewing one half hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will take place in Glen Eden Reception Centre.
