Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

February 26, 1921 - October 10, 2007 We are sad to announce our loving father and friend, Arnold Parker, passed away unexpectedly at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Arnold is survived by his loving partner of many years Meta Davidson, daughter Lynn and son Gordon. Born in Dominion City, Manitoba, Arnold was raised during the Great Depression. As a young boy he always managed to have money in his pocket by herding cows through town daily to graze. When WWII broke out Arnold joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers where he became a Japanese prisoner of war with the fall of Hong Kong on December 25, 1941. Arnold survived 4 years of prison camp horrors through his determination, intellect and, as he often recounted, good luck. This same inextinguishable spirit carried him through the rest of his life. After the war Arnold came to Vancouver then Victoria. He became a widely respected CGA and enjoyed working for the BC Ministry of Finance until he retired. Arnold enjoyed fishing and boating and his long relationship with Royal Canadian Legion Britannia branch where he would regularly be found playing snooker and cribbage. Arnold was a fun-loving, generous, kind and wonderful man with an incredible memory, sharp wit, and an ever present sense of humour.
Our father and loving friend is already profoundly missed and will be remembered by close friends and family at a Celebration of Life to be announced. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations will be warmly appreciated to the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association, Memorial Wall fund. See www.hkvca.ca for information. Condolences may be sent to ArnParker@gmail.com
