Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden death of John Cameron Matheson, on May 17, 1984 a at his home.
Besides his loving wife Margaret he will be sadly missed by his only daughter Sally and husband Bryan; granddaughters, Elizabeth and Lindsay; stepchildren, Linda and husband Joe; granddaughter Caroline, Leonard and wife Gladys and David; brother Farquhar and wife Dorothy; nieces and nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, first wife Elizabeth, brother Charles, sisters, Mary and Cathy.
John was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Jamaica and the ill-fated expedition to Hong Kong where he remained a prisoner of war for 44 months. He was a loving husband, father and grandpa and will be remembered with love and fondness by those dear to him.
At John's request there will be no services. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, Man., R3B 2H8.
The family wishes to thank a very dear friend, Mrs. Martha Adams for her kindness, Dr. Derek J. Waller for his support and the Winnipeg Police Department for its assistance.
