Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Excerpt from Legion Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Command Military Service Recognition Book:
Tom was born in Pipestone, MB on April 26, 1910. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1939 and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He was posted to Jamaica and, just before Christmas 1941, was sent to Hong Kong to protect the British Colony. On Christmas Day 1941, the Japanese captured Hong Kong and Tom began four terrible years as a prisoner of war. He kept detailed notes of the way he was treated in the camp and was able to turn them into a book entitled "From Jamaica to Japan" which was published in 1992. He had a photographic memory and he entertained his comrades by reciting poetry and stories. When the war was over, he was finally able to go home and arrived in Winnipeg on October 8, 1945. Tom married Edyth Smith-Windsor and they farmed in Reston, MB where they raised their family. Tom passed away on September 1, 2007 and is buried in the Reston Cemetery.
