Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
Winnipeg – On December 8, 1974 at Deer Lodge Hospital, aged 54 years, beloved husband of Kathleen Kelly of 759 Harstone Rd., Charleswood. He was born in Roland, Manitoba. Bill was an employee of the Royal Bank of Canada and served in various branches in Manitoba for 37 years until illness forced his retirement. He served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers during the second World War and became a prisoner of war in Japan. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Past Master of Hamiota Lodge No. 84. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Margaret and Judith, his mother Mrs. A. Kelly and a brother, David of Victoria, B.C., a sister, Mrs. Betty Martindale of Vancouver. He was predeceased by his father, Alex and brother, James. A private funeral service will be held in the Bardal Funeral Home with Cremation to follow. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, 700 Bannatyne Ave., Winnipeg. Bardal Funeral Home in care of arrangements, phone 774-7474.
