Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Bill (or Rankine as he was known to the family) was born in November 1922, to Joseph and Gladys Maltman of Minitonas, Manitoba. He grew up there with siblings Keith, Johnstone, Margaret, Sandy, and Eldon. He and his brothers Keith and Johnstone enlisted in the armed forces at the onset of World War 2. His brother Johnstone was killed near Ortona, Italy in October 1943. He did not know of his brother's death until he was liberated from POW camp in Japan. A tragedy of war to be sure.
He married Marie Kallio in 1946 in Winnipeg, and they had 5 kids: Larry, Judie, Wendy, and the twins - Roxane and Ronald.
He later married Patricia Cauldwell in 1981.
Enlisting in 1939 with the Winnipeg Grenadiers, he was stationed in Jamaica, and then on to Hong Kong in November 1941. Upon the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese, he was taken Prisoner of War with his Winnipeg Grenadier comrades, Spending over three and a half years as POW, he returned to Winnipeg after the war, living there for most of his life, with short excursions to Regina, and the surrounding communities around Winnipeg. He passed away April 4, 2003 in Winnipeg.
Updated information received from son Ronald in November 2018 which replaces an excerpt from a booklet Hong Kong Vets of the Swan River Valley compiled by Leone Sigurdson in September 2018
