Transportation - Home Base to Hong Kong
Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Obituary / Life Story
John AUBERT - On Sunday, September 1, 1990, Jack Aubert of 502, 1935 Haro, Vancouver, B.C., aged 68 years passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital.
Along with his loving wife Mona, he leaves to cherish his memory two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Margaret, Clifford and Allyn; four granddaughters, Meredith, Elizabeth, Ashley and Laura all of Edmonton; and Mona’s daughter Leslie; son Mark and granddaughter Sarah. He was predeceased by his first wife Anne in 1982 and his sisters, Muriel, Maeve, Kay and Dorothy and brothers, Pete and Stan.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jack served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and fought in the battle for Hong Kong in December 1941. He was a prisoner of war in Japan and returned to Winnipeg in 1945. Married in 1947 Jack worked for several structural steel companies as an estimator and manager in Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton before retiring in 1969. He resided in Vancouver’s west end for the past 17 years where he enjoyed golfing, fishing, walks along the seawall and his many friends.
At Jack’s request no service will be held. If friends so desire memorials may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, St. Paul’s Hospital, 1081 Burrard, Vancouver, B.C. V6Z 1Y6. Vancouver Crematorium 604-325-8251.
