Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

AXENT - Mr. William Axent, age 56 resident of 65 Ruttan St., was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital May 14, 1976. Born in Port Arthur, he was a lifetime resident of Thunder Bay. Member of Branch 129 Slovak Legion. He served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in World War II, and was a prisoner of war in Hong Kong from 1941 to 1945, Survived by his, wife Ann, three sons, Dennis and Michael at home, Richard, Oswald St. One daughter Darlene, Mrs. M. Patriquin, 161 Fairbanks Cres. One grandson. An uncle Harry Axent, 100 Banning Street. Three brothers, John, Arthur and Alex. Three sisters Pauline, Elsie and Betty. Predeceased by his father Nicholas in 1950 and his mother Ann in 1953. Funeral services Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court St, conducted by the Very Rev. Nicholas Maluzynsky of St. Mary's Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church. Interment in the Military plot, Riverside Cemetery. Funeral under auspices of Port Arthur Branch 5 Royal Canadian Legion. Flowers gratefully declined, friends who so desire may make donations to St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church Building Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Legal name was Axentchuk at the time he enlisted but they always used the name Axent until it was legally changed in the 60’s. His military records still show him as Axentchuk though.
