Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.
We do not have specific battle information for this soldier in our online database. For a detailed description of the battle from a Canadian perspective, visit Canadian Participation in the Defense of Hong Kong (published by the Historical Section, Canadian Military Headquarters).

SQUIRES - Ray (Arthur Raymond). Surrounded by family, Ray slipped peacefully into heaven on June 20, 2002 to be reunited with Marianne, his dear wife of 50 years. His physical and moral strength often amazed us, particularly his inventiveness, wisdom and humour. Born in 1912 in Saskatoon and raised in Kinley, Sask, he learned the value of caring for one another which deepened over the years. During WWII, he served as Chief Orderly in the dysentry hospital in Hong Kong POW camp, earning the enduring admiration and friendship of those with whom he worked, and was presented with the Order of the British Empire, for his service. On his return to Victoria, he welcomed family and friends into his home with an abundance of love and laughter for 60 years. At Ray’s Food Market in Esquimalt, he challenged our thinking, encouraged our efforts, and was always ready with a helping hand. His pastimes included steelhead fishing, hockey and gardening. At 81, he married Elinore (Petersen), which brought great joy to everyone. He will be missed by his sisters, Vera Belcher and Elsie Squires, his children David (Wendy), Rayanne (Bill) Klassen, and Philip (Nahed), Gordon (Sandi) Howe, Elinore’s faithful children, all his grandchildren, and many dear friends. Special thanks to Dr. Alan Leslie, Dept of Veterans Affairs, Ann Kalbertus and Hospice for their support in his final weeks. Service and reception at McCalls’ Funeral Chapel at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 27.
Instead of flowers, a gift to your favorite charity or to the Open Door would be lovely.
