Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

HANEL - The death of Joseph John Hanel age 63 years of 2417 Blame Avenue, Saskatoon, Sask. occurred suddenly on September 1sf, 1980. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 4th, at 3:30 p.m. from The Chapel of Mckague's Funeral Home conducted by Archdeacon H. W. Brendrick. Cremation. Surviving are: his wife Elsie, two sons David J. Hanel of Calgary and Timothy J. Hanel of Fort MacMurray, Alberta, two sisters, Mrs. Donna Carter of Mississauga, Ontario, and Mrs. Norma Howes, of Kelowna, B.C., and one brother, William J. Hanoi, of Wymark, Sask. Mr. Hanel was predeceased by his parents, and by a son, Leonard J. Hanoi on September 25th, 1972. Mr. Hanel was a member of the Nutana Legion #362, the Army Navy and Air Force Veterans Association, the Naval Reserve Association and the Saskatoon Light Infantry Association. He was a veteran of service overseas in World War Two and was a prisoner of war in Hong Kong from 1940 until 1945. Mr. Hanoi was active in fastball in years past. The family would appreciate donations to the Calder Rehabilitation Centre, 230 Avenue R South, or the Diabetic Association, 1410 Xii-burn Avenue. Interment of the cremated remains will be made in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
