Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

Son of Guillaume (aka William) Girard and Eveline (aka Evelyn) Boucher of Therien, Alberta. Enrolled in the 6th Course - NRMA - at camp 131 CA(B)TC for 2 months training, then in the Infantry (MG) Reinforcement on July 18th, 1941, transferred to the 1st Battalion Winnipeg Grenadiers on October 25th, 1941. He served in Alberta, Hong Kong with Force C. He had 157 days of service, including 55 overseas.

Statement by Pte. Maltman H6852: Girard was killed in the action of trying to get to the Police Station. Maltman left the Hospital he was in and went up Mt. Nicholson to find his buddies. Saw Girard's body and took off his tags. He had been shot & left unburied. Tag was turned in to RC Padre at St. Albert's Convent (name of Padre not recalled) was from Imperial Army. (Oct. 6/1945).
Statement by Pte. Guy H41664: We were in a defense position (Mt. Nicholson) when the Japs closed in with heavy fire of grenades and mortars. Girard was hit by shrapnel and killed instantly. I was wounded in the action. (Oct. 27/1945).
Statement by Pte. McShane H6868: My section was in a defense position on the top of Mt. Nicholson when Japs opened fire with mortars, grenades and M.G. I saw Girard fall when hit by a machine gun bullet. He was instantly killed. He was not buried then. (Oct. 27/1945)
