Members of 'C' Force from the East travelled across Canada by CNR troop train, picking up reinforcements enroute. Stops included Valcartier, Montreal, Ottawa, Armstrong ON, Capreol ON, Winnipeg, Melville SK, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Vancouver, arriving in Vancouver on Oct 27 at 0800 hrs.
The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the local soldiers that were with Brigade Headquarters from Winnipeg to BC travelled on a CPR train to Vancouver.
All members embarked from Vancouver on the ships AWATEA and PRINCE ROBERT. AWATEA was a New Zealand Liner and the PRINCE ROBERT was a converted cruiser. "C" Company of the Rifles was assigned to the PRINCE ROBERT, everyone else boarded the AWATEA. The ships sailed from Vancouver on Oct 27th and arrived in Hong Kong on November 16th, having made brief stops enroute at Honolulu and Manila.
Equipment earmarked for 'C' Force use was loaded on the ship DON JOSE, but would never reach Hong Kong as it was rerouted to Manila when hostilities commenced.
On arrival, all troops were quartered at Nanking Barracks, Sham Shui Po Camp, in Kowloon.

MAZE, Richard (Dick) Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba 13 February 1911 - Died 25 September 2010 in Chilliwack, B.C. Richard attended Moose Jaw Normal School and taught on the prairies until he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers as a Lieutenant in WWII. The Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles were taken prisoner at the Battle of Hong Kong in December of 1941, and spent the next 44 months as a POW in Sham Shui Po where he survived with the help of his strong will. Upon his return home he married Margaret (nee Rogerson) in 1946. He and Margaret and their daughter Rose-Ann lived in Victoria, BC until he was transferred to Vancouver, BC with BC Hydro in 1963. He retired from BC Hydro in 1975. Dick was active in the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club where he met Ann (Watson), whom he married in 1980. They began a life of travel during the winter, spending the summer lawn bowling in Stanley Park and enjoying their home at English Bay. Their travels took them to many countries around the world. They spent years as snowbirds in Laguna Beach, California where they created many friends through the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club. Dick and Ann moved to a Chilliwack Seniors Complex in 2006, enjoying their independence while living closer to family. Dick was predeceased by his first wife Margaret in 1976, his parents Richard and Annie (MacHenry), and his brothers Dave and Frank. He leaves his wife Ann, his sister Mary, his daughter Rose-Ann (Trev), his stepdaughter Anne (Michael), stepson Jim, grandchildren Dirk (Morgan), Evan (Jeevyn), Terri-Anne (Gord), Jackie, David (Alex), Ian (Sandra), and 6 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Ituna brothers back from camp
Two brothers were among seven Saskatchewan soldiers, liberated from Japanese prison camps, who reached the province at the weekend. They were: Pte. Fred Malbeuf, Ituna, who was hospitalized at Saskatoon, and Pte. Ernest P. Malbeuf, who went to Ituna.
Others who returned were: Lieut. Richard Maze, Assiniboia; Pte. Orville N. Hallquist, Tompkins; Pte. Earl H. Vermette, Prince Albert; Pte. A. N. Hoff, formerly of Kyle, who is spending leave at Swift Current, and Pte. G. I. Price, Saskatoon.
