Ken Mayo

(from Carol Hadley)

Ken MayoOn November 3, 2007 I was able to present our first plaque to a major contributor to the 'C' Force Memorial Wall. The plaque went to the designer, Ken Mayo, who donated his time and skill to assist us with this project. The occasion was his 60th birthday and I thought it was a fitting occasion, with his family and friends around him, to make the presentation on behalf of the Hong Kong Veterans and the Commemorative Association. Ken's wife, Linda is the niece of Bill Cox, WG, HK veteran, deceased.

When I approached Ken, as a former coworker and friend, to help us get started with this project the committee had an idea of what the wall should look like. As a designer/draftsperson he was able to take these ideas and create a couple of scenarios that the wall could take, keeping in mind the structural integrity. This was done with a foundation, support and strength in the structure complete with a patio surrounding it as we had envisioned. He worked with us as we asked for changes and we were able to agree on the formation of the wall.

He was given the names to go on the wall so that we were able to determine the dimensions in order to go out for quotations that were necessary to prepare a budget and make us aware of the funding that would be required to complete the project. He had almost completed the work when his health became an issue. In order to complete the job it was necessary to go to a drafting firm but because of all the work that he had done it was completed in very short order and saved us considerable money. We shall be always grateful for his contribution to the 'C' Force Memorial Wall.

It was with deep sorrow that we were informed of the passing of Ken Mayo on February 24, 2008 after a brave battle with cancer.  He is survived by his wife Linda, 2 daughters, 1 son, 2 grandchildren and his faithful companion, Bonnie, a border collie.
